Volunteering Abroad Shouldn't Cost the Earth

Volunteer Latin America News

Good news!

Countries and top locations will reopen soon. Machu Picchu will reopen to tourists on 1 July with free admission for Peruvians. The Galapagos will reopen for tourism on 1 July. Countries such as Costa Rica reopen at the beginning of July. Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya area in Mexico will open to tourists in mid-June. Many hotels in Cancun are currently offering holiday deals and discounts to kick-start tourism after lockdown (e.g. one free night in a hotel if you pay for two).

International Travel & Volunteering Update

Due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak there has been a lot of uncertainty around travel to Latin America and volunteering. While some voluntary programs have been cancelled this summer, others are planning to welcome volunteers as soon as government restrictions are lifted. Therefore, it's essential that you monitor the situation (e.g. quarantine measures, border closures, flight suspensions, health screenings and other measures). Some governments will ease travel restrictions far sooner than others. For example, British Airways are scheduled to resume flights to/from Costa Rica on 27 June 2020. Whereas, Argentina has banned all internal and international commercial flights until 1 September 2020

Spending Downtime Wisely

While the international tourism industry is currently on hold during this quarantine crisis, use the time to make preparations for volunteering abroad by searching for suitable projects, brushing-up on your Spanish, or planning your route and itinerary. The impact of coronavirus will be temporary. It saddens us to hear about projects severely impacted due to the coronavirus outbreak. Remember, the shutdown of national borders and quarantine measures doesn't change the situation for nesting sea turtles or poor and abandoned children. There are thousands of projects that depend on the assistance of international volunteers. As soon as government restrictions are lifted be ready to go by doing your homework now.
