Wildlife Internships at Rehabilitation Center Costa Rica

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured, sick, and orphaned Costa Rican wildlife. Our primary goal is the recovery and release of native animals back to their rainforest homes. We run a 24/7 veterinary clinic, nursery and a sanctuary for our permanent residents. Interns: Must be at least 18 years of age. Fluent in English and/or Spanish Can provide at least 2 educational/ professional references. Successfully completes a Zoom interview. We have three internships available. Orphan Care Internship As an orphan care intern, you will gain hands-on experience in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. You will be responsible for assisting to feed the babies throughout the day and on some nights, learning different feeding techniques that are invaluable when it will come to your future career working with wildlife. You will also be expected to assist with cleaning enclosures, medicating orphans, creating and administering enrichment, developing protocols for best practices, and maintaining the nursery organized. You will also get the opportunity to study biological rehabilitation, ethology, and development of wild behavior in reptiles, mammals and birds. Orphan care Interns: Can ideally commit to three months. Must be studying for a veterinary nurse, veterinary technician, or animal care-related degree. Must have at least one month’s experience working with neonates/ orphans. Veterinary Internship It is our goal to allow our interns to grow in the direction of their interests and work towards their long-term goals. Interns will be expected to shadow veterinary staff and assist with the daily running of the center. Duties will include; assisting and observing animal emergencies and triage, observing and learning about necropsies (interns may be qualified to perform necropsies on a case-by-case basis), assisting with animal husbandry and much more. Veterinary Interns: Currently studying or graduated in a veterinary related field Has clinic experience and ideally worked in a rehab center before Wildlife Husbandry Internship Here at Alturas, we believe in the positive impact an internship can have on a person’s studies and career development. That’s why we want to give you the opportunity to participate in independent research specific to your interests while also taking care of daily needs in the sanctuary and rehabilitation center. Our goal is to tailor the internship experience to each individual so they can leave feeling like they’ve taken a definitive step towards their future goals. Duties include; participating in animal training sessions at the sanctuary, creating and administering enrichment, carrying out an independent research project and much more. Wildlife Husbandry Interns: Has recently graduated or plans to graduate in a related field (zoology, animal keeping, wildlife conservation) Has experience working in a related field (rescue center, sanctuary, zoo)
