Volunteering Abroad Shouldn't Cost the Earth

Photography School Peru

Description

We are a social enterprise based in Huanchaco, Peru. We produce fair-trade greeting cards made with the pictures taken by teenage photographers aged between 14 and 19 that come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. Our mission is to offer better life conditions to our photographers and immediate family members through photography. Our photographers receive 60% of the profit that we made from the sales of the cards to invest in their education and housing.

We are constantly looking for creative, enthusiastic people who want to make a positive and lasting contribution to the lives of the FairMail photographers. We offer year-round volunteer opportunities in our photography school in Huanchaco and we welcome different volunteer profiles like photography trainer, psychologist, social worker, graphic designer (onsite and online), video maker, English teacher. We don’t charge any program fee and we offer pre-departure support (finding accommodation, etc.), training upon arrival and assistance onsite. Our two local co-managers will introduce you to FairMail and will train you in your tasks. You will have a weekly meeting with them to talk about the past week and plan the following week. Your tasks. Your weekly time commitment will be around 15 hours and your tasks will vary according to the position you are applying for. Your main task as a FairMail volunteer is to plan and lead the photo sessions in our office in Huanchaco. We have 3 photo sessions a week.

Our office is located in Huanchaco, a small fisher village 12 km north of Trujillo, the 3rd biggest City in Peru. Huanchaco is a major surf destination in Peru and it is famous for preserving the century-long tradition of the caballitos de totora, hand made fishing boats made out of reed. Despite being a relatively small village, it has a lot to offer: you can relax on the beach, take surf lessons, salsa and Spanish classes and you can visit the numerous attractions in the area, like the pre-Columbian mud city of Chan Chan and the various temples of the Moche culture. Huanchaco hosts many associations and NGOs, therefore there is a whole community of volunteers from all over the world that you will get to know and make friends with. The village is 20 min away from Trujillo, where you can have access to all kind of services and infrastructures (cinemas, shopping centers, big grocery stores, hospitals, post office etc.). By joining our program, you will get to know a group of fun, motivated, enthusiastic teenagers and you will experience Peru through their eyes, gaining an inside perspective on what life is really like in Peru for low-income families.

Reviews

Absolutely Incredible
"My stay here was absolutely incredible. It was a lifetime experience which will be always a part of me. But let's go point by point: the office is very welcoming, and also include the possibility to have your stay there, I loved the idea immediately. And in the reality is also the most comfortable. Huanchaco is a friendly, international and surf town. Love it! The workload for volunteers is not that intensive but it's actually depends on you, how much you put in. We have three half days work and some extra time that the volunteer can manages himself. This schedule gives you the opportunity to do other things in your free time. Like discovery the ancient ruins and the archaeological site, doing WorkAway or simply do remote work. The people who work here are incredibly kind and I felt very connected with them. We worked a lot about photography from all the basic themes to develop their photography ideas! These teenagers are so bright, lively, they brought lots of happiness and satisfaction in the time I spent with them. I recommend this project to all those who want to do a volunteer work that is creative!"- Chiara Chizzini
